Coins often receive admiration based on the current value as a rare specimen. However, the value of coins to archaeologists lie in providing useful temporal information on the occupation of a site. Although coins are often in circulation decades after they are minted, they are useful tools to relatively date non-diagnostic artifacts that are in direct association. Tokens can provide indications of goods and services available over time as well as exchange networks that cross national borders. Some coins & tokens were modified, often by piercing or cutting, for various purposes. Even modern coins found at the site are curated as parts of the archaeological record.
